The above is obviously not techie if you're going by 'market'. Generally speaking, Acer desktop computers are going to be on par with all other mass production machines. Inexpensive and not something I'd purchase myself or recommend to others. As far as Acer laptops are concerned you have three lines. The Aspire series is your typical "consumer" line which often means more junk preloaded on the computer and potentially lower design quality. The Travelmate line of laptops by Acer are of higher caliber. The machines are clean, still somewhat readily available with XP Pro, and well built. Acer also has an affordable extended warranty. The Ferrari line by Acer is the upper crust. Designed for those without objection to prices.
There you have it, a true 'techie' review.

I have a Acer Desktop that I bought for a screaming deal a few years ago. It works o.k, I have had to rebuild it 2 times, but the big thing (For me at least) is that the 13 in 1 memory card reader and CD player will not read anything. This happened right after I got it, but of couse there was no warranty. I think Dell's are better, but that is my opinion. Good luck hunting!

I'm not a techie but my ACER laptop has been running for 2 years now with only one issue common to most, that is short battery life. At least it does not explode like the very popular ones. But I like my ASUS laptop better.
ASUS and Acer design and make their own motherboards. The top brands just buy their motherboards. HP uses ASUS motherboards.

Though they aren't my top pick, Acer is far from the bottom of the list. More important than brand, make sure that you are getting 2 gigs of ram. Vista is a memory hog.

Each opinion is personal
My personal opinion is that presently hp computers are the best
- market confirms that - they are largest computer seller in the world today - talking about average computers of course windows os - vodoo, alienware, falcon and rest of gaming comunity are much better and much pricier but that is just small niche market

It seems to me I read that they are very popular in Asia (maybe #1?). If so, there must be a reason, and it isn't just price. They probably produce machines for other "name brand" companies as well. Google might tell you.
