Newborns generally eat as much as they want and then stop. If by chance a baby does take in too much, you will know it as it will come back out. Fluctuations in eating habits last throughout the first year and sometimes well into the second year. Babies do go through growth spurts periodically and your daughter may be going through one now. Or, she may just be a hungry baby. I say there is nothing wrong with 4 ounces every 2 hours. It is probably normal for her whereas another baby the same age may only eat 2 ounces at a time. Is she drinking breast milk or formula? Breast milk is very digestible and eating every 2 hours, even round the clock can be quite normal in the first months. If she is getting formula, try 5 ounces and she may go a little longer between feedings. It is not always the case, but formula is not as easily digestible and formula fed babies can often go 3-4 hours between feedings when breast milk fed babies may only be able to go 1-3 hours.

Newborns never eat to much if they are breastfeeding. Your body supplys exactly the right amount of milk. If bottle feeding are you sure she is hungry every 2hrs? Does she spit up after feeding? If she does than she may be eating to much or have acid reflux. If not then i wouldnt worry about it. You figure a newborn will more than double their weight in the the first 6 months. good luck

A newborn eats when they are hungry and stops when they are full. If she is still wanting more; give it. If she turns away or stops drinking; stop. And in response to the morons saying "if she's spitting up then she's eaten too much". No. Spitting up has nothing to do with whether or not the baby is full. A child that spits up can spit up if they have only a small amount of food in their stomach or if it is completely full.

Well how old is she? My newborn is 8 weeks old, is breastfed and averages about the same...4 oz every 2-3 hours. That's normal as per my doctor. Your doctor will let you know if you ask him/her according to the age of your baby. If she's not spitting it all back up then it seems fine. Good luck but I would call the doc for sure to check.

4 ounces is pretty common for a feeding she could be going through what is actually called a "growth spurt" which happens around 3 weeks, then 6 weeks, then monthly...of course every baby is different, but that is average. Be careful though that you aren't using the bottle to soothe your baby when something else could be wrong, that is a very bad habit to start. Also keep track of wet and dirty diapers for a day or so just to make sure she isn't getting constipated or anything

Babies do go through growth spurts even at the newborn stage. If the baby is spitting up a lot after feeding then yes she is eating too much. But I wouldn't be worried.

Please listen to the answer from "Sevenofus".
Do NOT give your newborn water because you think she's eating too much.
Do NOT withold any feeding without first discussing it with your doctor. That way, you'll know you're doing the absolute best for your baby.
Babies fluctuate all the time with how much they need, so it's usually best to follow their lead. But definintely check with your pediatrician before changing anything.
You're doing a great job to be concerned, just hang in there!

A newborn baby should be consuming ONLY 2 o/z of milk every 4 to 6 hours. A baby will continue to eat as long as you provide the source, They have not yet become alert enough to know when they are full and thus they continue to eat ( Drink ). If you wait for a baby to send you signs that he/she is full you run a great risk of your baby getting colic. FYI .. ALL babies spit up after eating, Its a normal process.

If she is accepting it ok then I wouldn't worry. She will let you know when she has had enough or wants more. Don't forget to "wind" her between and after feeds. I had six children (now grown up) and I demand feed them all. ie, I fed them only when they wanted it. You can wear yourself out feeding every two hours. If your baby is otherwise healthy and a good weight then I would demand feed.

If she gains weight too quickly the pediatrician will let you know. At each checkup the doctor usually puts the childs length and weight on a graph that displays the low, normal and high ranges for the sex and age group. I would feed her all she wants till the doctor says otherwise.
