The holocaust was a contributory factor but the main reason was to stop the bloodshed between jews and arabs as the jewish terrorists attacked the christian and muslim Palestinians and siezed their land.

2. No. Ever since the Jewish Diaspora there was a wish for a revived Jewish homeland. The Modern Zionist movement began with Theodor Hertzl (1860-1904). He and his followers campaigned for a Jewish state for most of Hertzl's life. A Jewish state almost became a reality as part of the Treaty of Sevres.
