Yes, sometimes silence is the best response; it all depends on the circumstances. As to be thought a fool, I do not think it is relevant. We all have been in a situation where we were silent and the impulse was to talk. I am sure that any audience would understand the action, at least those relevant people who chose to think. I do not count unthinking fools.

If I can't make any difference by saying anything, then remaining quiet at least doesn't add to the confusion. On the other hand, if someone wants to know what I think I'll do my best to help.

it seems to me that you're more likely to be thought a fool if you open your mouth and say something really stupid. if you remain quiet, it might mean you don't know the answer, or that you are shy or frightened to answer, but it does not mean you are a fool. the only time i could see it would be foolish is if something was happening and you didn't stop it by saying something, ie. something important to you.

it is ALWAYS better to remain quiet and wait for someone to ask for your opinion before giving it, your words will have a much bigger and more important impact that way
