I've just booked a trip to Dubai for a little over a week in February. I'm not staying at a hotel--I have some close family friends who have just moved to Dubai last month.

I personally am not worried, but my family needs some more convincing. It would be really helpful to hear feedback of people who live there, have visited recently, etc--and if there are any websites/articles you could reccomend, that would be great. Thanks!

Just to clarify, my family isn't going. I'm going with another friend to stay with a family I know that lives there. I'm American, but of Arab heritage.

If you let your parents review both of the two websites below, It will rest their mind

http://www.honewatson.com/10/22/travel-safety-in-dubai/

In Addition, I would personally guarantee your safety during your visit, if the parents ask for it let me know and I mean it.

Tell them living in Dubai-UAE is safer than any place in the world and maybe than your place itself.

Happy visit

By the way, the best time to visit is between November and March. December-January it's fabulous weather and the peak-time of so many events such as Dubai Shopping Festival

Safety in terms of what? Generally the UAE is a safe country but of course any country that is multi-cultural and has "guest workers" from various income levels along with a huge tourist population is going to have their burglaries, rapes, robberies (Mustu do you read the newspaper? No rape or robberies here? I suggest a subscription to The Gulf News or pick up a free copy of 7 Days!!) However, the incidence of these crimes are surely lower than other countries/cities of the same size. Come to Dubai and don't worry. Now if you are talking about safety riding in a car or crossing the street that is another thing. The UAE has one of the highest motor vehicular accident rates in the world. It also has one of highest deat rates for pedestrians. So buckle up, mind the crossings and say a little prayer. You will need it. The driving here is insane----horn blowing, speeding, no signaling, crossing lanes illegally, aggression, and general rudeness and craziness on the road is the norm here. Believe me I have been here for 5 years and still get nervous going out.

It is very safe. Since you are staying with friends, that is better as they can advise you on the dos and don't. It is only a week or so, so the time will go fast enough. You will probably so wish you had more time even once you get a taste of the shopping life etc there. Have a nice time!

Dubai and the UAE in general belong to the safest places on earth. Because you are of arab heritage I do not have to tell you how to dress in act in public. You or your family do not have to worry about a thing!

I's more dangerous to cross the streets than be on the streets in the middle of the night. Here you be safter than in the US!

Please ignore the answers giving above. These people have no clue what they are talking about.

Perhaps the safest city on earth.
A young woman can roam alone on the streets of Dubai at any time of the night. One can wear 10 kilo gold and roam in any street of Dubai without any fear of getting robbed.
I have not heard about a single incident of rape or robbery in Dubai since last 2 years.

don't worry...Dubai is comparatively a very safe place, and extremely popular among American and European residents here...the crime rate is low, most of the labourers and workers are quite honest, and the Dubai Police is very efficient and extremely impartial...the only problem over here is road safety, because drivers over here drive as bad as beginners in driving schools at times..also, some people can get too convinced avout the safety of Dubai that they venture off to unknown places at unearthly hours only to find themselves victims of something or the other...so as long as you're only going to hanging around between 7-23.00 hrs, i don't see any safety issues you have to be concerned about over here..
