Your love of Fantasy might disappoint you a little in the "classics" field, but the fact that you enjoy reading is a plus. Count of Monte Christo is an excellent book, full of adventure and intrigue. If you like the fantasy/sci-fi genres, then you should definitely read either Dracula or 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea by Bram Stoker and Jules Verne, respectively. Both were written in the late 1800's, so you may need to clarify the parameters of your assignment. Sherlock Holmes (Hound of the Baskervilles) is also good if you like a bit of mystery.
All of these are really good books, but you need to make sure that they go back far enough to fit the assignment.

So now you have to read a classic?
But The Count of Monte Christo is quite good and verrrry entertaining, as is Pride and Prejudice-- maybe at a slower pace, but just as bubbly and sly as any other book on its subject. Maybe more so!
Little Women by L.M. Alcott covers a lot a territory or, if you prefer,
Little Men by the same author. I liked Little Men because it dealt with such a wide variety of boys and how they are...
There are many more; I'll bet you have a list... ask a reference librarian what she/he would suggest if you like... just go to a library and give these great books a chance. There's nothing like them, and I read a lot... vampire and dragon books, too!

actually, i would say from your reading list above that you like fantasy and science fiction more than adventure and romance.
you cant go wrote with MONTE CRISTO or P & P, but here are some other suggestions:
shelley, FRANKENSTEIN, the original sci-fi, monster love story.
tolkien LORD OF THE RINGS, it's three books, though, very long, but this is one of the three books that ERAGON stole its story from.
stoker DRACULA, is the original book. it's a little cheesy, but really, really fun, and it'll show you where our whole vampire pop culture started.
huxley BRAVE NEW WORLD, is the adult UGLIES, but much more so. it's set in a future where people are made in tubes, and their class and appearance and position in life is determined before they're born. a "savage" who was born naturally in the wild is introduced into this society and havoc ensues.
bronte JANE EYRE, will take you to the worst girls school ever! then there's one of the best love stories ever, complete with faint fantastical fulminations. one of my favorite books.

The Count of Monte Cristo is an amazing book, as is Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. Just make sure you get the unabridged editions so you're not missing out on the full text.

One of the best books I ever read was “Hondo” by Louis L’amore. It has action, romance and friendship. Also, “The Black Arrow” by Robert Louis Stevenson, “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court” by Mark Twain (fantasy), “The Lost World” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, (fantasy) “ and The Scarlet Pimpernel” by Emmuska Orczy are books I think will hold your interest. Most, if not all, have been made into movies..

Day of the Jackel is a brilliant, exciting page turner of a book, and an absolute classic.
1984 is a fantastic and scary prediction of the future.
Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is an unusual and thought provoking horror.
I think you'll enjoy all of these books.

I also like adventure and romance. I read regency romances by Marion chesney, and mystery books. I used to read the Eternal champions book.
What I really recommend is the Stephanie Plum books by Janet Evanovich. They are full of action, sexual innuendos, and laughs. I laughed so hard from book seven that i was crying and had to take a break from reading. They are defiantly my favorite books.

Nothing on that list is even close to a classic. Yes, The Count of Monte Cristo is a very good choice. So is To Kill a Mockingbird. Pax - C
