An atom is the smallest particle. A cell is way larger than a single atom. I'll put it this way, if you had a microscope and you placed an atom under the light; you would not ever be able to see it, it is just way to small. Yet if you were to place a cell underneath the microscope light, you would be able to see everything in the cell. Hope I was of some help. Great question for an 8yr old to ask, very smart boy. A cell is much, much larger than an atom. A typical animal cell might be 10,000 times as wide, long, and tall as a typical atom, or about 1 trillion times the volume of an atom.
Another way to arrive at this answer is to consider the fact that cells are made up of atoms, so the atoms must therefore be smaller.
