Sure, but expect lots of criticism! I was married for many years, and didn't KNOW any gay people. All my old friends were other (straight) couples. After the divorce, however, I no longer fit in with that social group. That basically left gay people for me to hang out with, seeing as all my old friends were married, and so was and IS everyone else my age. Many of my old friends criticize me for having gay friends, but they are not in my circumstances, either! Of course, even though I love my gay friends to death, that doesn't mean I approve of their sexual CHOICES, and we are sometimes at odds over this. So I would say it's fine to have gay friends, but if you are straight, you might want to have a man of your OWN eventually, or it could lead to some problems (for YOU!) on down the road. And for God's sake, DON'T fall in love with one - it will make your life a pure living hell, I can assure you!

I value the friendliness that some straights express here , and I have a few straight friends . How you handle the straight people in your life who criticize you , I guess is your decision . Hopefully , the more gay people you come to know , the less need you will feel to tolerate those who condemn us without bothering to know us first.

Although I'm gay and the majority of my friends are all straight, I don't really "prefer" to hang out with either because neither have a problem with my orientation.
Friendship is friendship- not relationship... It doesn't matter which gender your friends prefer because they are your friends and theyre there for you- no matter what anyone says

Is it okay for me to be gay and have straight friends? If we limited ourselves to just being around people like us, would we have any friends at all?

ummm my girlfriend is friends with 5 gay guys... yea that is more than the amount of straight guy shes friends with. It's perfectly normal, it's good to be open minded. Don't treat us like were aliens.

Its ok to be friends with anyone regardless of what sex they are or what sexual preference they have. My gay (male) friends are just friends to me....they dont flirt with me and they dont hint around about trying to flip me to their team. My lez friends are just friends.....I have hundreds of non gay friends and some that are....I dont make a distinction between the two. Thats just me. Honesty my gay male friends are good at telling me how to match my clothes. They have the look I guess.

dude...
when I was in middle school,
I had nothing but gay friends.
and every second someone was asking me was I a lesbian.
At the time....I was not..
or didnt think I was,
but people always try and associate who you are with the friends you have.
Its normal.
There is nothing wrong with it.
I love having gay guys for best friends.
who else will pick out my outfits?

It's ok to be friends with anyone you like... The ones that say no are probably homophobic and afraid they will catch that dreaded disease called gay.
