Girls can ask guys, but from what I've seen, it's more common for guys to ask. I'm not exactly sure why it's this way. But I know that girls CAN ask guys, and it's not a guaranteed failure, because in February, my best friend asked a boy a grade higher than her to the Valentine's Day dance, and he accepted. They've been a happy couple for eight months now.

However, I am also pretty sure that the custom is for guys to ask girls, at least where I live, and I'm 99% sure that reflects most of America; and I believe there is a very similar chance of failure/success. I suppose it might be because girls are generally more "picky" than boys. She (the best friend I mentioned) turned down three guys (including me), but got accepted the first time she asked.

Why do guys have to ask girls first? They don't have to, but it certainly is smart, considering the chances are usually small that a girl will ask the guy.
