What good is freedom if you are dead? Does that not seem like sort of an obvious answer?

I disagree with the thrust of the question. We do not accept security over freedom. There is always a balance between freedom and security. Given the threats people are faced with, at times the balances must be adjusted.

Would you board a plane today in a country where no security checks were being performed and they advertised that fact as a selling point on convenience?

I love it when people say that giving up freedom for security is an o.k. thing. That makes me giggle like a child. What they dont tell you is that while Clinton was in office he tapped over 200,000 phone calls without the patriot act. If you think that because the P A says you have to be in some kind of federal database that has to do with terrorism to have your phones tapped you're really cracking me up. They do whatever they want when they want. That's the real truth. They can testify without being under oath. That's the truth. What no one else tells you either is that they can turn the cell phone mic. on anytime they want to and you don't even know it. I have nothing to hide but I know that power corrupts. And I know that power will be used in the wrong way. That's how these ******* keep their power and they gain more of it every day. You believe their b.s. and get screwed in the end. These kind of evil acts don't happen overnight. They work slowly and they work behind the scenes to get what they want. While alot of americans are blinded by what the media sells them. Case in point. Our president gets the ball rolling on the North American Union. How many people really saw that on the news? The North American Union driver's license was just recently designed in North Carolina. How many of you knew that? And now they're working on the Amero dollar. You dont' notice it though when you're fighting over the Iraq war and the idiot from Iran. Or you're fighting over Socialized medicine. That's how they win. And until we all pay attention they will keep getting what they want because you were busy paying attention to Paris Hilton or the horror in Darfur.

Do yourself a favor and ACTUALLY READ the Patriot Act.

It clearly states that you must be under federal investigation for supporting or participating in terrorist acts in order for it to be used against you.

Quite frankly, if you meet those requirements, you may want to stop worrying about your personal freedoms and start trying to clear your name....

So, how many freedoms have you lost? Name one person you know who has had the Patriot Act wrongly used against them, or used against them at all for that matter. My life hasn't changed one bit, except now, every few months, I see a new article about a terrorist plot being foiled. That's a good thing. Provisions of the Patriout Act were essential in foil that recent German plot against Americans. They eavesdropped on their cell phones to locate the terrorists.

Because Republicans believe that security equals freedom. They do not understand that those who are secure are not necessarily free.

To use a historical example, the average German from 1933-1945 was safe and secure, but he wasn't necessarily free.

He did not have the freedom of speach that Americans at the time enjoyed. If he was critical of the government, he was deemed undesirable and executed, the fate of Erwin Rommel and a Lutheran minester who was involved in a seperate attempt on Hitler's life. And his only choice for the Fuhrer of Germany was Hitler, where as an American had Roosevelt or his Republican opponent.

He did not enjoy the freedom religion that Americans at the time enjoyed. If you were Jewish, you carted off to a concentration camp and later, an extermination camp, and then back to the original concentration camps as the Russians began approaching the death camps. And while Christianity was restricted, it was used as a tool of of the Nazi state.

He did not enjoy the freedom of the press that Americans of the time enjoyed. Every newspaper in Germany was directly controlled by the Nazi Party, and that meant that if you didn't like Nazi Oppinion pages, you didn't read the newspaper.

He didn't enjoy the freedom of assembly, as if you didn't gather on the orders of the Fuhrer, you must be getting together with traitors to the Third Reich and must be punished.

The German of 1933-1945 was "safe", but he had no freedom.

The US in comparison was founded on the principles of Democracy...
-"Give me liberty, or give me death!" Patrick Henry.
-"No taxation without representation!" American protest to British taxes.

Also remember the first 10 ammendments to the constitution guarenteed the protection of free speach, freedom of religion, the right to an organized militia, etcetera, etcetera. At the same time the ordinary American had good reason to be afraid. Disease was more dangerous, America could not fight and win against the established European powers at the time, and he always had the fear of being attacked by Indians. The American of 1776-1800 was not necessarily safe, but he was free, and he was happy.

Arguing solely for security at the price of freedom is wrong.

I know many Republicans who do not support all that the Patriot Act proposes. There are certain provisions within the act which are necessary and helped restore information sharing abilities to intelligence and law enforcement which were eroded under the previous administration. However, there are also some terrifying aspects contained in this act. In my opinion security is an illusion, but once freedom is lost it is never regained. We are all going to die some day, this is just a fact. Until my time comes I want to live as free as I can. If society becomes so oppressive in its zeal for the appearance of security which doesn't really exist then what is the point of living? Everyone needs to remember that the ultimate goal of terrorism is not necessarily to kill us, but rather to destroy our way of life.

You are a FOOL if you care more about yourself and your own so called "Rights" to the point that you don't care if your country is attacked by terrorists. Your countrymen, friends, and family are at risk of being killed. How selfish can you get!!
"WITH FREEDOM COMES GREAT RESPONSIBILITY". Are you responsible? It sounds like the thing you fear most is losing your "Right" to do whatever you want whenever you want, and you simply don't care about anything or anyone except yourself. That truly smacks of spoiled rotten BRAT-ISM.
I hate to break it to you but we have already been attacked by the same terrorists that are vowing to attack us again, and 3000 Americans died in that 2001 attack. If we sleep it WILL happen again and that is a promise made by them, not a threat manufactured by Republicans.
The "SECURITY" that you feel is a threat to your so called freedom is the very thing that is protecting your freedom. Duh!! So which came first, the chicken or the egg? (In other words, which comes first, the security or the attack?) Common sense tells anyone that If we have good security we can overt attacks. Conversely, If we have no security we invite the attacks.
Now, isn't it logical that if we are attacked again, to the extent that they threaten us, that it will cause us to lose our freedom because we will be controlled by terrorists who have sworn to ALLAH that their flag (Not ours) will fly above the white house. Do you want to be forced into submission by fanatics that will refuse to allow you any freedom whatsoever? It is obvious that you do, because you think that "security" is only a plot to deny you of your own personal freedoms.
Now, let me explain something to you. Sometimes it is necessary to make sacrifices for the common good (That is if one cares, and maybe you don't). Maybe the Republicans are assuming that the Democrats care about the right of this country to remain a Democracy so that you and your children and your children's children can have your freedoms. SO, if you have to give up a freedom temporarily (maybe you will, or maybe not), to enable the government to protect the freedoms promised to us in the constitution, forever more, don't you think it is better than Not giving up a freedom temporarily, and then you and all your loved ones suffer the consequences? Oh, that;s right, you don't care because you don't like inconvenience and maybe you don't have loved ones because you love only yourself.
America is the greatest country in the world because it cares so much about freedom, that it fights for the freedom of every country in the world, and not just for itself. I Applaud the Republicans for their caring so much for our freedoms under the constitution that they risk unpopularity to preserve the freedoms of someone like you who does nothing but complain even when his life has been saved.
Let us remember the wise words of JFK, " Ask not what your country can do for you but rather what you can do for your country", BEAUTIFUL!!

I have no clue why, because if it isn't obvious security is never permanently preservable. Freedom however can be, but only if we are willing to incur the risks that come with it. I feel that freedom is well worth any risk associated with it and therefore we ought to preserve ourselves from the possibility of tyranny like that which is possible from the Patriot Act and others that weaken the constitution supposedly in the name of safety.

Log off the computer and turn on the tube. The documentary "War" is on right now. Watch it and gain some perspective. Better yet, ask your grandparents what they went through during the 40's.

My life has not changed one iota since the Patriot act. If my neighbor Mohammed is having his phone calls from Syria listened to, that's fine with me if it stops some maniac from killing Americans.
