My first child was born at 37 weeks and 3 weeks early. The worst thing hospitals do is tell you not to come in too early or they'll send you home, which makes us all the more anxious about being at home and wondering how late to leave before heading to the hospital and worrying about traffic, parking, how long the trip is and so forth. I think when your contractions are 5 mins apart you should definitely be heading in, of course, this all depends on previous experience also. If you are so utterly uncomfortable being at home you can always go to the hospital and just walk around it until they will admit you. I wish you all the best for a safe delivery.

Don't waste you time going it to find out if you are or not. The less time you spend in the hospital, the better!!! Contractions are different for everyone! no one can tell you how your contractions are going to feel!
Wait it out.. you will definitely know when you are! In fact, if you can still smile, you don't need to rush off to the hospital :)
My water broke and instantly my contractions were 6 mins apart... but I didn't rush off to the doc. I labored at home on my bed with my husband for 4 hours and when my contractions were 3 mins apart we called the midwife. We got to the BC at 8:30 and the little guy was born at 9:11... I'm not saying you need to wait that long, I just mean that you will know when you're in labor besides, most women who go to the hospital too soon wind up causing their bodies to stop.. and then it's a waiting game again.
Just try to go about your normal activities. If you're usually asleep, try to sleep... your body knows what to do so don't worry! :)
Oh and btw my baby came 3 weeks early..

You could have the Hicks for literally up to a week before actually giving birth, but if you are uncomfortable you need to be your own advocate along with your child's.
My mom had a similar thing happen to her and they kept saying she wasn't in labor and she wasn't in labor, finally she told them that she wanted another doctor's opinion or else she would sue. The other doctor realized it was fetus distress(mine), and did Cesarean surgery. The hospital was lucky my parents didn't sue, because I was born three monthes early and had appendix juncstomy from where my intestine hadn't developed and the ambiotic fluid was drowning me. They literally pulled a pound of fluid out of my lungs with a needle and I weighed 2 pnds and 2 ounces.

I am a nurse and if you feel contractions 5-6 min apart go to the hospital. Do noy risk your life and especially your baby's. If you need some help driving call a friend, but try not to go by yourself incase you need further help. Even is your child is due on October 22, many babies are due 2-3 weeks premature. Just play it safe.

The best thing for you to do right now is relax and time the contractions. You want to know how long it is between the contractions and how long each contraction lasts. These are questions your doctor will ask when you go in to be sure you are in labor. Also they will want to know if you have lost your mucus plug yet (really nasty looking goobery stuff) The best advice is when in doubt go ahead and go in to the hospital, they will hook you up and moniter you for awhile and let you know what is going on. Good luck

Anytime you feel you might be in real labor you should call your doctor and then see what he/she says. If you cannot get a hold of he/she, call your hospital and ask to be transfered to Labor and Delivery. Then explain to them what kind of symptoms you are experiencing. You can be wrong sometimes about BH or actual labor so be better safe then sorry and call your doctor!
BTW: My sister-in-law's cousin JUST had her baby boy today and he was due October 15th, so you NEVER know!

sometimes labor can take a while. The hospital will not admit you until you are 4 cm unless your water breaks. Just stay calm and try to relax. If something really odd happens then call the hosp. If your contractions become more reg. then start timing.

You probably don't have to rush off to the hospital right away - if you did you'd know it.
But call your OBGYN (if you have one) or just the hospital and tell them. (You'll get a quicker more reliable answer) and if they same come up, then GO!
You can never be to safe.
