About a year ago we bought a 10 gallon tank, and it seemed it would be fun if we got some Platies and Mollys, in total we had:

2 Orange Mollies
3 White Platies
3 Orange Platies
4 Neon Tetras
1 Algae Eater
(and some lefter over feeder guppies from a science fair project.)

The problem is, the mollies and the platies have cross bred to creat one REALLY hardy fish. Or should i say "some" really hardy fish. A bit of a short estimate would be around 60-70 fish, and we have given away 56 of them to friends, but the more we give away, the more that keep coming. They are all about 1-3 inches. And we just don't know what to do with them, we have asked pet stores and relatives a like, but none will take our fish. The pet store has told us to bag them and throw them in the garbage, but we just can't bring ourselves to it. I want to get rid of them "naturally", and i need your help. Please help our overpopulated civilization that is our tank. Any ideas would be apreciated.

First you should separate the fish that keep breeding. And you should place ads in the paper and everywhere you can. You can place an ad on petfinder.com. I don’t know is you’ve heard of it but it’s an adoption thing online and you can place ads on it. And you can go to pet stores and place ads there. Most pet stores have a place you can put them. And you can try putting an ad up in your school if they let you. And if you’re really desperate you should even put posters up on polls on the street. Just put something up everywhere you go. I remember have the same probable as you. I hated it. I also had that problem with wild snail. My cousin gave me one and they turned into like 100. Never get a snail out of the wild.

Find some friends or neighbors with large, piscivorous (fish eating) fish like Datnoids or Piranhas. They could use the fry as a nutritious source of protein and it is 100% natural (the food chain rules supreme). Try to give away all the females so they stop having babies. If you keep the females, they will likely still be pregnant, which doesn't help the situation at all.

EDIT: Almost NO fish stores of any kind buy the common livebearers such as Platties, Guppies, Mollies, or Swordtails because they are so cheap and easy to breed. You could always donate them to the store, but there is almost 0 chance of them paying for fish that breed so readily.

I agree totally with Soup Nazi. But what I can't understand is why more aren't being eaten. Normally if they are left to have the fry in the tank, they become snacks for the other fish in there. It's strange that so many would make it. Are you putting them in breeding nets or something? If so, I would stop doing that and let them have them as they would in the wild. Then it becomes survival of the fittest.

I know you're faced with a hard decision. If you DO have to find a way to dispose of them, please do it as humanely as possible. And trust me, you would NOT be the first person to do this. Many many people do because of overpopulation. I feel for you. Try hanging a flyer or something up in your local supermarkets advertising the free fish!!! Anything is worth a try!

Good luck to you. ;o)

If I were you, you can try and seperating the males from the female if you don't want any. Also, you can try and set-up a tank for oscars and feed them the fry. This is probabaly better since they won't really be taken by your store.

As Soop Nazi said, you should try and just donate them to the store.
