The modem interfaces with the broadband feed (DSL or CATV) and provides an Ethernet feed to your LAN. The modem settings are set by the ISP and altering them usually results in service failure.

If you have an integrated modem and router from your ISP, check with the documentation. It will show you how to change LAN settings which you can do.
