Okay heres my dilema. My xboxlive has a strict nat meaning that i cannot connect and chat with many of my friends. I have had xbox live for a while and this new internet box we got when my family moves has the strict nat. I want to know if i can set my xbox to have a static ip and do port forwording on it or whatever i need to do, while the other computers are dynamic. I understand to fix the nat i need to forword some ports or something and i need static ip on the thing. So can i turn one thing static and leave the others normal?

You can assign static IP addresses on your LAN and port forward to them if your router is able to do port forwarding.

You must use the same sub net for all devices on your LAN (first 3 sets of numbers are always the same, the subnet mask is the same, the default gateway is the same to be on the same subnet).

Now the router assigns dynamic IP addresses and you cannot have a static IP also handed out by the router. Your router has a defined dhcp range of IP addresses (e.g. for the 192.168.0.0/24 subnet, your router may have the ip address 192.168.0.1 and this IP address is also the default gateway and LAN DNS address, the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0; the DHCP range may be set to cover 192.168.0.2-192.168.0.255. Limit this range to, for example, 1921.68.0.100-192.168.0.255 which allows you to use 192.168.0.2-192.168.0.99 for static IP devices. Once you make this change in the router, save the router config, reboot the router and all LAN devices so they will be given a dynamic IP in the new range. Now assign 192.168.0.2 to the x box, with default and dns 192.168.0.1 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0. Record the static assignment somewhere because you do not want to use this again. I often use label tape and affix the tape to the device. Now set up port forward to 192.168.0.2 for the proper ports and you are in business.)

Note in my example all LAN IP addresses have 192.168.0 for the first 3 sets of numbers as this means, along with the 255.255.255.0 subnet that all are in the same subnet.

You can set it's address fixed, but must use an address outside of the range of dhcp. The easiest way is to set the last number slightly higher than the upper address in the dhcp pool on the router. In other words if your router dhcp shows a range from 192.168.1.5 to 192.168.1.30, you should set it to 192.168.1.35 or similar. Make sure you avoid the router address also. You will need to set it's dns to the router address, as this is a proxy dns server, and set the default gateway to the same.

Its a myth, dynamic is dynamic, you can however use a DNS service to map a domain name to your dynamic IP, so you just need to remember the domain name.
