For the same reasons our elected officials in Washington take so much... Because we allow them! Our founding fathers (Franklin specifically) thought that paying members a small stipend would allow even the lowliest farmer opportunity to serve. It requires a great deal of time spent away from home (and the family farm). By paying a small stipend, even the poor could aford to serve in public office. As it stands currently, they've completely lost sight of the original intent. If it were up to me, I'd say that the representatives could collect no more than the mean average salary of those they represent. Pay would not be based on the seniority system currently used.

They're all greedy. They are putting themselves before the rest of us that live in Michigan. We voted them in to help support the majority and to represent the people. What do they give us in return? A possible shutdown b/c everyone is selfish and greedy and they're more concerned with getting their way and their money than they are about us people as a whole.
