Carpet beetles will eat almost anything organic.

Lots of cleaning and possibly a whole house fumigation is in order.
Anything which can not be fumigated can be frozen in a regular home freezer for several days while sealed in a plastic bag. Allow to thaw in the bag for several days, then repeat the freeze cycle.

While that website is very good, if you are looking for less toxic approach try this website. In mean time, try sprinkling Borax powder on the carpet, leave for a few days if possible (no pets or babies I hope) and then vacuum throughly!!!
Also Diatomaceous Earth (DE) can be used like the borax but it's a bit more damaging to lungs, our lungs, if you get down on the carpet and roll around. Just walking a bit is fine. Use pest quality DE, not swimming pool filter grade, the particle size is quite different, you want the finer garden pest grade.
Yeah, they can come in on clothes, furniture, etc. New housing areas have this problem quite often. Both articles stress regular cleaning.....daily vacuuming and dispose the bag or debris completely out of the house after each vacuuming.

It is really something for a pest control officer as they lurk in the dark in the corners and munch continually until they have cleared the pile off the carpet and they are not covered under home and contents insurance. We tried everything we could and still could not get rid of them, they even got into the bottom of the sofa at one stage. I used to drown them with a carpet shampoo machine and move the furniture around so they got light and not dark but still they munched. To stop the spread from the lounge we gave up and ripped all the carpets up and then the underlay, bombed the whole area and went down to the pine floorboards and restored them. We thought we would give it three years and then try carpets again. They do not appear to have got onto the rugs though.

Hire a steam carpet cleaner. Kills the beetles and any eggs they have laid. Cleans your carpet at the same time with no chemicals. Tried it and it works.
Best of luck.
