I agree with WisePagan and Avail_skillz
American Christians have been taught to hate the ACLU and cite NAMBLA as the reason... (because everyone hates the idea of child molestation).
But the ACLU will usually end up defending the "indefensible" because that is how our system works...
Without such a system, are we really any different from Iran?
Or more to the point - look at what happened in our own country when we didn't have the ACLU... The Salem Witch Trials... What a happy time in History that was!
Secondly, it is a slap in the face for Christian Americans to bash the ACLU... it's like saying "Thanks for all the rights and freedoms but please shut up now... don't give anyone else a shot at a good life."
Brenda P says they "defend murderous pedophiles" and gets 8 thumbs up??? This board has been hijacked by right-wingers or something...

The ACLU like the Constitution is here to protect minorities and would be heralded as Revolutionary by our Founding Fathers. A society where everyone is in agreement only exist in totalitarian countries strictly because the citizens have no rights. The ACLU protects the right to disagree.

I think they are an organization that is much needed by a free society.
they defend all constitutional granted freedoms, even of people that exercise them in a way I do not agree with.
Just because I do not agree, doesn't mean they support communism/socialism or anything else right-wing extremists like to claim, because the ACLU is standing in their way of eroding the US Constitution.
I sure bet the jewish people of Nazi Germany wished they had someone like the ACLU defending their rights.
Someone defending the rights granted by our constitution that we don't agree with is more important and protects our freedom far more than people defending the rights we do agree with. Talk to an old German, and they'll tell you the erosion of their rights by the Nazis didn't just happen over night, and started by attacking the rights of people, that a majority of people didn't agree with.
Anyone who hates the ACLU, because they stand up for everyone's rights, instead of only the people they agree with, do not really understand freedom, and have no reason to consider themselves a champion of American Ideals or a patriot of the stars and stripes.

Good Question... and I'll answer it with more questions:
Do you agree that the President has the right to ban christians from protesting outside of Gay people's and soldiers funerals?
Do you agree that black kids should be tried as adults for attemptive manslaughter in Jena?
Do you agree that a soldier who dies in Iraq should not be allowed to put his religious symbol on his headstone because Bush doesn't like his choice of religion?
Do you think that conservative radio shows should be banned from the airways? What about liberal ones? (The ACLU has defended both...)
Do you think that Amish people should have bricks thrown at them?
Do you think that christians and other religious people should be forced to educate their children in public schools?
I think the ACLU is a necessary part of protecting our civil liberties (even the ones that bother us occasionally).
Christians should just take a moment to understand that what protects "minorities" will someday protect them (and already is) when the tables turn...
Did you know that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world? It's only a matter of time before Christians are also needing "protected class" status.

I don't think they are as bad as everyone says they are. Although we may not agree on everything they do, I have looked at what they are fighting. Things like the Patriot Act, Real ID Act, Military Commissions Act, warrantless wiretapping, the new FISA legislation, and they are trying to restore Habeaus Corpus. Say what you want, but all these laws are in one way or another are unconstitutional. And without Habeaus Corpus, the right to challenge our detention, our other freedoms minus well not exist. So, they do fight for the Consitution when it comes down to things such as this. Our own government is doing more damage to America than they are.

It pisses me off when it protects things I don't agree with such as organizations like the KKK or Neo-Nazi groups. In those cases, the ACLU is a necessary evil; it protects the rights of everyone---even the ones you wish would disappear.
In the long run, I'm glad they are there to protect the things that I DO agree with and others may not.

Necessary...not often a joy...but still very necessary, as a counter balance to forces of power who would always seek to stifle freedom.
I believe there are more instances of the abridgment of freedom of the people by gradual and silent encroachments by those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.

I thnik they are a very good group.
they defend the constitution and people's rights with no bias.
they even defend their critiques- something few people can do.
the only thing I feel bad about is that they can't take up all the cases out there. they lack the man-power and the money for that
