I just bought a red- eared slider turtle yesterday. I've been trying to feed it turtle food and celery leaves, but it won't eat. Any tips?

Baby aquatics in the wild are primarily insect eaters. They also scavenge dead things, such as fish.
The BEST starter food is tiny earthworms.
I recommend that you read some books on turtle care, there is a lot that you will need to know- much more than you can learn at yahoo answers.

red eared sliders are omnivores, meaning they eat a mixture of animal and plant material, you can feed them live feeder fish, crickets, earthworms, fresh greens such as dark leafy lettuces but never head lettuce. It does take a few for turtles like everything else to get use to a new environment.

They eat underwater, is there enough water in his tank to allow him to do this? I never did feed mine celery leaves, but he did like chopped up carrots (manageable bits) and loved the turtle food (pellets)

I don't think turtles eat as much as say people or dogs. Dogs eat several times a day as do people. Some animals and I think turtles are such sometimes only eat now and then. Like once a week! I am not saying turtles eat only once a week but I don't think they eat 3 meals a day kind of thing. Do a web search on it hon.

Is his setup correct? Tank size needs to be 10 gallons per inch of turtle, water depth 1.5 times length of turtle, a water heater kept at 78F, a heat basking bulb with a temp of about 90-95 at the basking area (something he can climb out of the water onto to dry off), a reptile UVB bulb within 12 inches of the basking area, NO gravel on the bottom of the tank (causes impactions), and a variety of food items. I'd suggest reading the caresheets and diet recommendations at this site for further detail:

Mine eat birds, and they don't eat whenever I clean and/or rearrange their tank...try again tomorrow...they also love the krill content treats.
