Because they were discriminated against horribly when they came here. My grandmother still has signs that say "Irish need not apply" from when she immigrated to Boston from Galway. By the way, I'm not a fan of that word - for ANYONE.
Oh, and if you want to get technical, it's green ****** not that it makes it any better.

ok, you asked so don't get offended. "Green ******", : Mainly in the US... cities with large Irish populations. Used to denote the Irish, who many hold in the same regard as blacks.

that is not true,the irish have never been referred to as that.i have heard of the term black irish meaning very dark haired,dark eyed irish.

I don't think that's the term they used. They were called the black Irish.Of course the term originated in the US and it was used to describe ppl with dark brown hair that were also Irish. They also had dark features & it was believed that had a mixture of blood in them that wasn't "white".
