Hello,

I currently have a ATI X850XT Platinum video card, a 460 watt power supply, and some little PCI fan that came with the pc.

I want to upgrade these options. I'd like to speak to somone who has done so. Dell told me not to upgrade my power supply.

I want to switch to Nvidia (ATI has some compatibility problems), upgrade my wattage, and buy and install a quiter PCI fan.

With a dell xps gen 5, I can only upgrade to a 650 watt power supply though right? There's only a small spot to put the power supply in these machines.

You have a fast card with outdated Shader version. Significant upgrade would be the Geforce 8xxx series.

Your current graphics card is a 78 watter. Your processor is a 130 watter. These two plus the fans and drive motors ALL draw from the +12V rail of the power supply. If your current 460W unit has dual +12V rails and rated at not less than 25 amps, it may be able to run the 103W 8800GTS but may have difficulty with the 136W 8800GTX. For cool and stable running all day long it is best to have 30 to 35 amps on the +12V rail.

If you purchase a power supply make sure it was designed for the Dell. Dell uses a non-standard power supply.
