The Constitution of the United States is a triumph of a democratic republic. To assume that it is "to protect the economic elite" is naive at best. You should study Bacon's Rebellion as well as the Whiskey Rebellion. Both played heavily in the minds of the framers of said Constitution. As is, that document protects the rights of all tax paying, law abiding citizens. Not just the wealthy.
