would it be possible to keep one in a small 5.5 gallon tank?

I ask because some sites say a 10 gal for two, so should 1 be able to stay in a 5.5 gal tank?

Of course it is possible to house an anole in a 5.5 aquarium but recommended? Not! The question becomes this: is it responsible? You need to think about the animal, it's habits, requirements, health and comfort. You are trying to put a type of animal that has way too many needs and requirements in a less than adequate environment. I do agree with another post that a couple of small hermit crabs would be alright or an aquarium setting with a (few - meaning 2 or three) small fish in it. Hermit crabs are mostly nocturnal (night active) though and most people don't appreciate that. Hermit Crabs would adapt to the smaller area especially if you give them something to climb on. Even though they are more active at night you can enjoy seeing them climb, measure up new shells to see how they fit and eat/drink all through the evening. They can act like little bulldozers at times and are also very curious about new shells, rocks and plants that are added to their space. Whatever you do, remember that even though something may be possible it may not be the right thing to do. It is always best to put the animals needs above your own.

No, a 5 gallon would still be too small. You have to provide a basking heat light at one end of the tank, and the other end of the tank needs to be cool. You just can't achieve this in a 5 gallon. 10 gallon tanks are only $10.00 at Walmart--pretty cheap. You'll spend a lot more money buying the heat equipment, UVB lighting, cage accessories, and providing a variety of insects (plus stuff to care for the insects!) Here is some additional care info--a very good care sheet:
