Because I have a bad habit of throwing my remote against the wall & I never know if it's broke of if the batteries are dead

depending on the kind of remote, you might be hoping that the button signal is broken

to make sure you mashed the button right...not more than one button or the wrong button, but the one you want. and most of the time you dont wanna get up and change the channel much less the batteries so you make sure you have to!
