Some time ago, an international body renumbered the groups of the periodic table. This is a sign of people with too little to do.
Group IA: Alkali metals
Group IIA: Alkaline earth metals.
Group IIIB, !VB, VB, VIB, VIIB, VIIIB, IB, IIB: Transition metals
Group VIA: Chalcogenides
The name comes from the Greek kalk, which means copper or bronze. The sulfides, selenides, and tellurides of transition metals have a coppery or bronze appearance.
Group VA: Pnictogens
The name comes from the Greek pnein, which means to choke or suffocate. The organic or hydrogen compounds of these elerments are poisonous, choking, or suffocating.
Group VIIA: Halogens
The name comes from the Greek halide, which is salt. The metal compounds of these elements are salts.
Group VIII: The inert gases, the noble gases.
Until 1960, it was thought that these elements coluld not combine at all.
