Last year when the Padres and the Dodgers tied for 1st place of their division, the Padres got first place because they had beat the Dodgers more games during regular season play.
If Colorado wins today, they will be in a tie with the Padres for the wild card spot. Since Colorado had beaten the Padres more in regular season play, shouldn't they win the wild card spot outright? Why is it they have the one game playoff for the wild card spot and not the division title?

No, they did not have the same record between them. They played each other 19 times and Colorado won 11 of them.

In 2006 both the Pods and Dodgers went to the postseason; when this situation obtains, that two teams from one division will advance (one as the division champion, one as the wildcard), the the tie is broken on paper statistically.

That's not the case this year. The D'backs won the West outright, and two teams cannot fit into one wildcard berth, so they settle matters on the diamond.

Tie for playoff seeding, but both going? Work it out on paper.

Tie for a ticket to October? Grab the bats and gloves.

It's because the loser will not advance to the playoffs. Even if the Dodgers had been given the division instead the Padres would have been in the playoffs.

THey have the same record

they've beaten each other 8 times in 16 total meetings

and they're in the same division

so they're making a 1 game playoff tomorrow...a winner takes all game

I don't know, I wonder about that too. Well the Rockies won so there will be a one game playoff. Rockies vs. Philles and Cubs vs. Diamondbacks.
