There are only 50 recognized states in the US- there are territories that include Guam and Puerto Rico.
Only 48 states touch one another- as Hawaii's an island and Alaska touches Canada. Washington D.C. is NOT considered a state, as the people living in that territory cannot vote. So the answer is 48.

This isn't a difficult question.
Just think is there are any states that may be Islands. Also think about any states that may have been "bought " from another country.
Or just look at a US map. How many states are shown as "insets" meaning they are not connected to the others, but are separated by a distance greater than the map can show?
