I lived in Colorado Springs for over 25 yrs and loved it. It was named the best city in the U.S. to live in over 300,000 population. Ft. Collins is a wonderful city too. It was voted best city in the U.S. under 300,000 population to live in. See website below and then do some more checking ...I think you would really like Ft. Collins.

Size is a matter of taste. Here are some ideas for you to consider, from larger to smaller.
Colorado Springs - not as big as Denver. Some good cultural stuff. Still a "big city".
Boulder - great cultural stuff, educated population, pretty congested, very expensive.
Fort Collins - a popular choice, with a major University. Middling in most regards.
Grand Junction - pretty isolated, but uncongested, and about as inexpensive as Colorado gets. Great weather, even for Colorado. Retirees, so decent medical facilities.
Buena Vista - about as inexpensive as mountain towns get, with a decent climate, unusually warm for the altitude.
Leadville. Maybe the most unpretentious mountain town. 10,000 feet, with a rugged climate (cold). Many people move there and just can't take it.
Note that the ability to find work decreases as the size of the city gets smaller. Buena Vista or Leadville would be tough.

I would move to Boulder. Your kids will hate you in a few years if you move to Colorado Springs.
Boulder is kinda that modern little city. Theres a little bit of outdoors with out the Red Neck aspect but still a lot of culture and classy things you would find in a regular city.

Fort Collins is great. Just the right size and is a "College town". It's not as expensive as Boulder. I lived in Denver and loved it, but I'm not a fan of Colorado Springs.

Broomfield..this town is great for kids. The kid activities are widely supported and it is easy to meet people. The schools are great. You are only 20 mins to Boulder or Denver from here. You can get a condo in the low 200s that is surely going to rise.
