I'm from Michigan, but I want to divorce my husband and just leave him because I'm afraid he will do harm with me if I'm going to divorce him. I want to go to Utah or California in another State and file divorce there. Can I do that? We married in Ohio; but our we live in Michigan. What will I do?

IN ADDITION TO MY QUESTION: I'm not yet a US Citizen I'm on my permanent residency. Too many to mention all the hurt and things my husband done with me. If you were in my situation maybe you have already divorce your husband earlier; but he always treaten me to go back to my own country. He mentally abuse me he is evil. That's why I want to leave him one day without telling him. My question is, is there any conflict with my status here in US as a permanent resident if I divorce my husband in another State

As others have mentioned, each state has different laws about this issue. Your best bet is to contact a lawyer and find out what the legal issues are regarding your status, and find out what ALL your rights are. That way, you do not make any mistakes when planning to leave him.

call the immigration office and find out. then you can get a lawyer and take 1/2 the money in the bank and pay for it. you can do this one day hes working and leave. you can move where he won't be and you dont' have to give address. its easier to do this in michigan since you are living there and resident. some states are 6 mos and so on to live there first before you can file. so michigan would be best bet and all the things happening to you and threats the law can take care of it.

the biggest thing here is you must meet that states residency requirement before you can file for divorce so under this youd be better filing in Michigan and also the quickest. These other states may require 6 months for residency requirements. So file in Michigan if thats where you live before he does and gets homefield advantage over you, get the divorce and move on afterwards without excess baggage. Good luck

You have to do it in Ohio or Michigan I would think.Call a lawyer and I have to ask this with respect: Why were you ever with a man like that? If my husband ever threatened me or put a hand on me he'd be eating the floor! You want your kids to see its ok for a man to abuse you and be raised like that. for godsakes! you need to ask ask what are you valued! Are you worth hitting etc? Men like that are insecure and use fear to keep women! Each day your with him your missing Mr.right and hes finding someone else. You can pack your things and go to a place for women, call the police. Trust me your man is insecure and a loser! I'd so beat his a***** Call the immigration office as well. If you do nothing with all these people giving you advice then you get what you deserve because you making excuses staying. Someone has to say it here!

You can move and divorce in another state, but you have to have residence in that state for a certian period of time depending on each state. If you feel he will harm you, inform your attorney of this, that way you can get a restraining order against him if you need it. I wish you all the best.

About the U.S. Citizen thing, I really have no clue. Maybe you could contact a lawyer who specializes in that sort of thing like immigration or so, then they could tell you what would happen.
