A clock chimes once at 30 minutes past each hour and chimes on the hour according to the hour. For example at 1 PM there is one chimes and at noon and midnight there are 12 chimes. Starting at 11:15 AM on feb. 26th 2003, on what date will the 2003rd chime occur?

The clock will chime once at 11:30 a.m. and 12 times at noon. After that, for each 12-hour period there will be 12 for all the half-hours, plus 6*13 for the hours (1+12, 2+11, etc.). That makes 90 chimes every 12 hours, or 180 chimes each day.

Divide 2003 by 180, and you get 11 days with 23 chimes left over. Subtract the 13 chimes we started with (to noon on Feb. 26th), and it will be 11 days and 10 chimes after noon on Feb. 26th.

2003 is not a leap year, so February has 28 days like it did this year. Eleven days will get us to March 9 at noon, plus the 10 extra chimes. Do a little counting, and you'll end up at 3:30 p.m. on March 9.

Let's think about it this way, take it easy:

if it chimes once at 30 minutes past each hour that's mean it chimes 24 times a day.

And if it chimes on the hour according to the hour, that's mean:

(1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 11 + 12)*2 = 156.

156 + 24 = 180

That's mean it chimes 180 times a day.

And in the first day which is feb. 26th 2003, starting from 11:15 am.

if it chimes once at 30 minutes past each hour that's mean it's gonna chimes 13 times.

And if it chimes on the hour according to the hour, that's mean:

12 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 11 + 12 = 90.

90 + 13 = 103.

So, let's declare x as the number of days, we have:

180x + 103 = 2003
180x = 2003 - 103
180x = 1900
x = 1900/180
x = 10.5556

That's mean on the middle of the 11th day.

If we started from feb. 26th
feb 27th 1
feb 28th 2
Mar 1st 3
Mar 2nd 4
Mar 9th 11

So, the chime # 2003 will be on March 9th, 2003 in the afternoon, arround 12:00 pm.

The clock will chime 180 times per day (based on a twelve hour clock! If using a 24 hour clock system, this answer is wrong!). Every 12 hours: 1+2+3+4+5...+11+12 = 13*6 = 78 + (each half hour one chime = 12) = 90. 24 hours in a day so: 90 * 2 = 180.

2003 chimes / 180 (per day) = 11 days and about 3 hours later.

At 11:15 AM on March 9th (2003 was not a leap year!), we have heard 1980 chimes. As of 12 Noon, the total will be 1993. There will be 2 chimes from 12 to 1, 3 chimes from 1 to 2, and 4 chimes from 2 to 3. The 2003rd chime will occur on the 2nd chime at 3 PM on March 9th 2003.
