The best thing is to get a prescription for Valtrex or Acyclovir. (They work in the same way once in your system, and Acyclovir is a lot less expensive as it is generic). However, some people find that they have a preference for one over the other. I get headaches on Valtrex for instance, but not on Acyclovir. There is also an Acyclovir cream. Some people find it works, but there seems to be mixed feelings on that.

Take care and best of luck,

This won't help you right now, but if you get cold sores often, get a prescription for Valtrex. You take it when you feel one coming and you won't get it. Abreva works for when you have one but you don't want to keep getting them. Also take some ibuprofen to get rid of the pain so you don't keep touching it.

Ugh, I'm sorry. Cold sores suck!! You can get Abreva and put it on it. Otherwise DON'T TOUCH IT! That will make it worse!

For future reference: call your doc, ask him/her for a prescription cream. I think I used to have Denavir (not sure I spelled that right)... it worked a lot better for me than Abreva.

I've been getting those awful things for years and i always soak a cotton ball in peroxide and hold it on your lip for as long as possible. (even an hour would be great). It kills the virus quickly and is the cheapest thing out there!

Additionally, taking Lysine as a supplement from now on should help prevent outbreaks. Here's a link that explains how Lysine works as a prophylaxis for cold sores:

Best of luck to you . . .
