Ron M has a good start, if that does not work try booting in safe mode and then restoring your computer to a previous restore point.

of course you have to be in windows to do this.
to get into windows try hitting the F8 key while booting up. before the splash screen.

then chose the option boot in safe mode.
then you can use the list below.

In windows XP you can get to that point by going:

Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore.

chose to restore to a previous saved point. then let it do its job.

hopefully you have a restore point saved.

after you get in, and restore you might want to do a scan-disk to verify your hard drive is still good.

( all of this should be done by a professional )

if none of this works , you might need to buy a new hard disk and install it ( unplug the old one )
and let windows ( windows disk ) re-install on the new HD. after that you can put the old HD back on, to get to your critical files.

You might also have a Fan problem. your CPU, and or Video card fans could be bad, thus needing replaced.

I have seen that cause the reboot issue before.

I would really recommend you take it to a repair shop for professionally fixing this kind of problem, you might loose the whole computer if you do this wrong.

but , I hope this helped.

Try running the repair from the Command Prompt. Here are the instructions.

USING THE WINDOWS REPAIR CONSOLE

Put your XP disk into your CD drive and restart your system. This will start the XP installation process. When you come to the screen that asks if you want to install XP or if you would like to “Repair” XP, choose Repair. This will open the repair console command prompt. At the prompt, type: chkdsk /r. (There is a space between the k and the /. Now hit “Enter”. The repair should now start. Allow it to run until it stops. This can take some time, so be patient.

If all goes well, XP will replace any and all missing operating system files.

There are 2 aspects to this difficulty. First the boot, then determining why it happened. (perfect wager - you already had an epidemic, possibly a root-equipment) i'm assuming the laptop labored until now installation Avast. there are a number of stuff to objective, first may well be besides into secure mode. Use the F8 key at contemporary after turning on the laptop, you'll be able to ought to press it a number of cases. this might enhance a menu, spotlight secure Mode and press enter. If the laptop boots effectively, uninstall Avast and attempt rebooting generally. Ask back if this would not artwork.

2 possibilities:
1) your registry has been so far altered that windows cant find the startup files so it cant startup

2) your HD is dead

either way you cant use that PC anymore
