An excellent place to learn about the market is yahoo finance

http://finance.yahoo.com/

You can watch any stock , learn from the ed links under the investing tab and create hypothetical portfolios for free .
Better to watch your stock there , the newspaper is history .

Buying a stock is buying (in most cases ) a small % of that company .
Shares on the major exchanges range from a $1 to hundreds per share (except Brk A which is just over $118,500 per share ) .

Nornally , a brokerage requires about $5000 to $10,000 to open an account then you can buy stocks bonds , mutuals funds and ETFs .

Start studying the finance page so that when you are ready , you will know what is going on .
