The general rule for keeping fish with moderate activity level is that the minimum dimension of the tank (usually front to back) be at least the adult length of the fish to allow it to turn around. Given that iridescents can get 48-52 inches as their adult length, there are no commercially available tanks that would really be suited for them. A 220 gallon is only 72 x 24 x 30 (l x w x h). You'd need to have something custom made.

You could raise it to as large as you could keep it, then try to find it another home, but there's already a surplus of "monster" fish, and public aquaria can only take so many.

adults are really unsutiable for home aquaria.

trust me. 40 + inches and the tank should be re.enforced glass well acrylic for that size. As they are powerful fishes and skittish and can crack a standard tank.

my largest was about 8 years old and 24 inches long, and that was stunted. They will need at least 300-500 gallons for awhile and some might say that they will even need a larger tank. They arent really suitable for home aquaria.

Thats the problem as they dont tell you that at the petstore and they are cheap and very easily obtained.
