just cause your computer is slow.... Doesn't mean you have a virus....
IF you have aniti virus on your machine there would be a pop up box telling you the virus name....
I would recommend a derag first....
start, programs, accessories, system tools, disk defragmentor....
Then if you are still worried download the latest virus definitions from your AV provider...
and check for spyware if you have pop ups of advertisements....

If you are sure you have a virus, start with a really good antivirus program. I recommend Norton, but there are other good ones out there. Like McAffee which offers a free online scan for your computer. Go to http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp
run the scan to find out if your computer is infected.
I recommend you purchase an antivirus program whether or not your computer is currently infected, it will protect your computer in the future.
If you don't have a virus, you may just need to clean out your computer. On the Start menu, go to Accessories, system tools, disk cleanup. This will clean up a lot of temporary files. You could also try defragmenting your computer(also found under the system tools) and uninstalling any unused programs.
If all else fails and you do have to format, you will need the original discs that came with your computer, if you put in the CD, then restart your computer, it will lead you through the process.

My computer zips along, I have Ccleaner (free) it clears out old files you dont need that can slow down your computer, Eusing registry cleaner (free) clears the registry of useless files left behind when you get rid of software, a free Defrag which creates more space on the hard disk and I also have AVG antivirus and AVG antispyware, Spybot and Spywareblaster.
I would definitely try downloading Ccleaner, Eusing and defrag your computer before you think of formating and also look at how many programmes you have starting all together when you start your computer also I would get rid of any software you dont really need as this will speed things up a bit. Try this and I am sure this will make a difference - Good luck

If you know nothing about computers you shouldn't be using one in today's environment. You gotta get current anti-virus and anti-spyware software and get rid of whatever is the problem. Reformatting is like burying your head in the sand. If you don't take precautions, you'll be infected again in no time.
Good Luck

Take it to your local shop and have your system swept. They can back up your files and re-install them for you.
