Separate issues. People can make up their minds about abortion based largely on religious or moral teachings and beliefs. Thinking about the death penalty is different- but check out the last source for the overlap.

You don't have to condone brutal crimes or want the criminals who commit them to avoid a harsh punishment to ask whether the death penalty prevents or even reduces crime and whether it risks killing innocent people.

What about the risk of executing innocent people?
124 people on death rows have been released with evidence of their innocence.

Doesn't DNA keep new cases like these from happening?
DNA is available in less than 10% of all homicides and can’t guarantee we won’t execute innocent people.

Doesn't the death penalty prevent others from committing murder?
No reputable study shows the death penalty to be a deterrent. To be a deterrent a punishment must be sure and swift. The death penalty is neither. Homicide rates are higher in states and regions that have it than in states that do not.

So, what are the alternatives?
Life without parole is now on the books in 48 states. It means what it says. It is sure and swift and rarely appealed. Life without parole is less expensive than the death penalty.

But isn't the death penalty cheaper than keeping criminals in prison?
The death penalty costs much more than life in prison, mostly because of the legal process, which is supposed to prevent executions of innocent people.

What about the very worst crimes?
The death penalty isn’t reserved for the “worst of the worst,” but rather for defendants with the worst lawyers. When is the last time a wealthy person was sentenced to death, let alone executed??

Doesn't the death penalty help families of murder victims?
Not necessarily. Murder victim family members across the country argue that the drawn-out death penalty process is painful for them and that life without parole is an appropriate alternative.

So, why don't we speed up the process?
Over 50 of the innocent people released from death row had already served over a decade. If the process is speeded up we are sure to execute an innocent person.

By the way, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, surely one of the strongest opponents of abortion, has its own campaign to end the death penalty.

Abortion, yes. It's murdering an unborn child in my opinion.

Death penalty, not sure. I think some people should die for what they do - child molesters more than others. There is no lower form of life than a child molester yet they don't get the death penalty unless they kill the child. For the rest, I don't know. I suppose if you kill someone you should pay with your life.

Abortion- I feel a woman should do what she wishes with her body. Right or wrong, she is the one who has to deal with it and answer for it. I personally would never have a abortion but I don't look down on those that make that choice for themselves.

Death penalty- The punishment should fit the crime.

I'm against abortion, but not death penalty. Abortion means that you are killing an innocent child who doesn't have a choice in the matter, so it's practically murder.

If somebody murdered someone else, wouldn't you want them to have the death penalty so that you could make sure they wouldn't kill anybody else?

I'm not against them.I think every woman should have an abortion if she doesn't want a child born, imagine being raped and getting pregnant.
And i always feel everyone who commits murder should have death as a punishment too,i personally believe everyone who deliberately rapes or kills a child should be murdered too.

nope, the reason is......abortion... everyone has differnent lives and things going on for someone to say who and who cant choose to something with your own body. some may agree some not but its your life you have to deal with not someone elses andthe dont have to deal with whats in your own head. death...... i agree sorry but i do what gives the right for someone to commit a crime? depending on the crime and it would have to be pretty bad i agree it almost like filtering out the econy so to speak. but everone has there own views and the are intitled so dont be upset with someone elses oppions that what makes the world go round
