Hopefully your laptop came with a restore disk that will return it to it's original condition. This will return your laptop's software to exactly the way it was when you first opened the box. It WILL erase all of your personal files - word documents, digital pictures, emails, music, etc so backup (you may not *think* you care about the files but if you don't backup now there's no changing your mind later!).

If your laptop didn't come with a restore disk (or perhaps a special hidden partition) well then you're gonna need a windows install disk.

You need to first get a backup of ALL of your hardware drivers. If you have windows Vista you can make exactly ONE set of restore disks. If you have XP but you have an Acer you can use the buddy program that runs in the top right corner to generate a factory default disk/s. You then neet to restart the computer with the restore disk in the optical tray at which point the computer will boot from the cd and prompt you on restoring your computer. If you can't make a restore disk you will need to save a backup of all of your drivers and buy a copy of yoru current OS. Windows XP Upgrade costs 99 dollars and allows you to reinstall XP up to 3 times giving you both the option t clear files and settings or to keep them.

Try disabling ALL your startups in msconfig. Click start, click run, type msconfig, ok. Select Startup tab, disable all, apply, ok. PC will restart. Observe speed of laptop. You can enable the necessary startups again in msconfig.

If RAM is 512mb or less, consider 2x512mb. It would do wonders to your laptop.
