One of the best books ever written

Jonas lives in an utopia, where there is no war, pain, suffering, poverty, illness/disease, or crime. Husbands and wives are matched up according to combability of personality. Children are adopted from the town's birthmother. Transportation is limited to bikes, and houses are called dwellings. Everyone in the town cannot see color. Sounds like a perfect life.

On Jonas's 12th birthday, he is assigned a job which he will work for the rest of his life. He is given the most highest job in the town--the Giver. The Giver is the one person in town who takes on the burden of war, pain, illness, disease, loss, grief, violence, and crime--through memories. Jonas can hold the memories and pass them onto others. Soon Jonas begins to see color as well. He becomes an apprentice to the town's current Giver....and what he is exposed to changes his life forever. He begins to notice that he is more emotionally mature than his family, because of what the Giver exposed him to. Because of this, Jonas makes a daring escape from the utopia.

hope this helps
