Forming an opinion on an entire group based on one or few member(s).
The Typically use regarding the creation of a sweeping ethnic/religious/gender stereotype, but it can be used to describe any extrapolation perceived as unwarranted.
e.g. Muslims attacked the World Trade Center, therefore all Muslims are terrorists. OR You've been bitten by a dog, therefore all dogs are vicious. OR Your boyfriend treated you badly therefore men are pigs.

I've heard it said this way, "can't see the forest for the trees."
Said that way, it typically means don't get hung up or caught up on one small aspect of the issue because you might miss the big picture and therefore lose a balanced perspective.

To me, it means that you shouldn't base your entire opinion or view on something to one small piece of information or experience, when theres lots of other options to consider.

It probably means you can't judge a whole based upon a small part. Short, you can't generalize. Ex.: a black guy robbed you. You can't think all black people are thieves.
