If you have seen a professional quarterback, then you know that they are fit. They have to throw the ball with great accuracy. They have to be quick and agile, to run and avoid being tackled. They also have to be mentally sharp, because they have to make split second decisions on where to throw or pass the ball.

Well honestly the QB better be fit. Football takes a high level of endurance for anyone except maybe the feildgoal kicker, who's job is mainly to kick the field goals and extra points.

The quarterback has to throw hard and quick, he has to be able to run when that 240 plus pound linebacker is right in his sight with the intention of slamming him into the turf for a sack. The quarterback like all most any American football player needs to be able to withstand punishment, even with pads and helmets. Players still suffer injuries and broken bones.

The quarterback if things go right for his team has endure the better part of 3 to 4 hours worth of elasped time standing on the feild running, throwing, and taking a few hits. He can't afford to be throwing lazy and tired passes late in the game. He has to stay sharp both physically and pyschologically for 4 quarters of football.

If not then he will eventually wind up getting rusty and tired late in the game which could be the difference between losing and winning. If the QB continually tired mistake that allows victories to slip away, he will lose the confidence of his teammates and quite possibly his job as a starter.

Those quarterbacks that never leave the pocket (the circular area the offensive line creates) can be overweight, so yes. But quarterbacks that roll out on occasion (which in todays NFL, is just about every single one) need to be fit

Yes.

Many times they have to avoid the defensive pass rush if their lines break down and create positive plays from plays that have pretty much been busted by the defense.

Many offenses (more in high school and college) run schemes that need quarterbacks to be speedy and athletic.

The quarterback is the main target of the defense, he
has to be fit enough to get away and to take a good
solid hit(s). He also directs the team and does some
pretty lengthy passes. Yeah, he's gotta be fit.

They have to be fit. Just watch Tony Romo lead the Cowboys in the game they played today against the Rams.

No, dear, they are very athletic. They run and pass and get knocked down! It takes being in good health and being fit.

lol of course they would, its more than just throwing a ball, its major activity and exertion, its learning how to fall when you get tackled, its learning how to preserve your body as best you can.
