You can try cleaning an inconspicuous area of your wall with a solution of TSP. Painters use TSP to clean walls before painting and it will remove very stubborn buildups of grease, grime and smoke residue. You can find TSP in the paint sections of most hardware stores, Lowe's, Home Depot etc. Be sure to wear gloves.............this is tough stuff. It would be cheaper than painting, but this type of cleaning is hard. I would consider painting the walls.

Mr. Clean makes a product called Magic Erase. It works amazingly great. Once I started on one wall I had to do all my walls. I looks like a sponge.

Have washable paint? Use liquid Spc N Span with water (it does not leave a remaining residue like my favorite Pine Sol.
