They died in the flood that occurred after the levees broke, mostly. That and miserable conditions. This water was rushing and full of debris. Many folks drowned were swept away. Many more died at the Superdome and other refuges because of horrible conditions there; particularly the elderly.

Another way this storm killed a lot of people was from the storm surge it kicked up. People tend to think about New Orleans and its breached levees but they often don't realize how devastated coastal cities like Biloxi, Gulfport, and Bayview were by this hurricane.
