Having Too Cold a Freezer Can Leave Ice Cubes Hollow

A very common problem with automatic ice makers is the hollow cube. Although they look interesting, hollow cubes don't cool drinks too well. There are a couple of factors that can cause this.

One thing that is easy to check is the temperature of your freezer. Put a thermometer inside the freezer for a few hours and then go back and check it. The temperature should be between 0 and 5 degrees. If it is too low, cubes don't get a chance to freeze in the center before they are dumped into the ice tray because the ice maker works faster.

your water pressure is not high enough (make sure the valve is open all the way) or the tube leading from the back of the fridge to the icemaker is too close to the icemaker (take finger and push the tube back a little, not too hard tho).

Your ice cubes come out hallow because your refrigerator is not cold enough. Your freezer has to be at least 30 degrees Fahrenheit to make good ice cubes. Put a thermometer in your freezer, if it reads higher then 30 degrees, raise the setting on your cold control to reach 30 degrees.

Your cubes are hollow because their is not enough water in them. The water flow may be restricted or they supply line may be to small. Try cleaning out the supply tube inside the freezer as that may be partially frozen.
