If you're talking about drywall, get a small container of spackling, a putty knife, and some fine sandpaper.

Lightly tap the hole with a hammer, just enough to make a slight dimple in the wall. Not too hard, or you'll break the drywall. This is perhaps the most important step. If you don't make a dimple, covering the hole with spackling can be very frustrating.

Then fill in the dimpled area with the spackling and smooth it. It may require two coats.

Once it's dry, it's ready to be sanded and painted.

you can get a small deal of putty from wal-mart, or if you just need a quick fix. Use toothpaste. Not gel, but the white stuff. If your walls are white, no one will notice. You will need to touch up the spot either way if your walls are colored tho.

Buy a small container of light weight spackling it doesn't shrink and dries fast. Just push it into the hole and swipe with a putty knife to smooth.

You can use drywall compound or caulk. For holes that small, apply it and smooth it off with a putty knife. Easy as pie. For something bigger this link will guide you.
