I was 14 years old when I read my first Agatha Christie book, and honestly, it really was unputdownable! Two years later, here I am, one of her diehard fanatics of Agatha Christie. Yes the books are almost 50 years old, but thats what makes the plot stand out. Its really great how she thought of such plots!
I know that ONE MANS MEAT IS ANOTHER MANS POISON..But I still can't believe that you think her books are unpickupable!!!

ok I love the only book-I forgot the title-in which Ms. Christie writes about Egypt. But the murder on the orient express was boring. So-
one book of Agatha Christie's in unputdownable.

Not an Agatha Christie fan myself - try Ellis Peters' Cadfael mysteries instead. The first book is 'A Morbid Taste For Bones'. Elizabeth George also has a nice line in mysteries - start with 'A Great Deliverance'.

I just started reading Agatha Christie in the past year. I really liked And Then There Were None and Murder on the Orient Express (A Hurcule Poirot mystery).

Actually love Agatha Christie. They were lots of fun to read. I like detective stories.

You might like Elizabeth Peters Amelia Peybody books. They are set in Egypt at the turn of the century and are gothic/romance/humor type books.
Crocodile on the Sandbank was the first

It's just personal taste, I suppose. I really like the atmosphere conjured up by the books and I like the (admittedly simplistic) characters. I guess lots of people do which is why all her books are still in print. However, just because something is popular does not mean you have to like it. I've never got beyond page 2 of anything by Stephen King and the film adaptations of his books are terrible. This is in spite of his writing in a genre I like. I guess I just can't get on with his writing and you're the same about Christie.

Hi Anna,

well Agatha Christie books were written in a bygone time, before Internet, emails, playstatins etc etc..
They're like Enid Blyton books for adults and are very english in style
People had simpler tastes and were less worldly, people therefore were forced to use their imagination more and these books, being mysteries , were and are ideal for the use of ones own imagination.

They are 'whodunnits' really so when someone gets engrossed in them they cant put them down as they want to find out who the culprit is .

She's sold over 2 billion books, so someone must think that her style, carefully crafted plots, sense of the historical period, and charming characters are interesting.

If you don't agree with them, that's ok. Like all literature, you need to expect to have to do some work in understanding the pace of life being depicted, and the amount of detail being given. Remember, these books were written when there was little competition from tv, radio, cinema, internet, etc.

Maybe you'll come back to them when you're much, much older and have lots more time to fill.
