Being a member of a bunch of clubs isn't the important thing. Anyone can join a bunch of clubs and then do nothing in them. It's what you do that makes a difference.

Teaching 300 children how to swim over the summer is impressive. Being a member of the movie club for four years is not.

Being the president of the Chess Club is impressive (somewhat) -- being a non-participative member of fifteen clubs at the same time is not.

Stop thinking quantity and think quality. It's what you do - not what you join.

The real secret - well rounded. That means you are academic (good grades), artistic, athletic, and social in about even amounts. The purpose of "clubs" is to demonstrate this well roundedness. But, there are things that are way above "club"; an example: who would you consider, a member of the school book club or a person who wasn't in the book club but has published her poetry or exhibited her art? A member of the school fitness club or a student that ran the Boston Marathon? A member of the school band or a musician that plays piano at the nursing home every Sunday afternoon? A member of the computer club or a student that teaches basic computer class at an urban rec center? A member of the health club or the student that volunteers at the hospital twice a month?

Now, go out and do something that makes a real difference in the community. Find something that needs to be done and do it or cause it to be done. That makes a difference on an application.

You are fine. Most students go through high school with no extra curricular activities. Only about 25-50% of students in high school join clubs. I myself have not joined any clubs but I plan on volunteering at the local hospital and getting a summer job-- which will look good on college aps.
