A "real" ranch cowboy (as opposed to a rodeo cowboy) can ride a horse (to herd cattle) and rope off of it if need be. He knows how to tell when a cow is getting ready to calve, a mare is getting ready to foal, how to fix fence, dig post holes and lots of other things. He doesn't have a 9 to 5 job. Mostly it is sun up to sun down. Sometimes he has to have a town job too, to make ends meet. Most real cowboys I know are respectful of women and elderly people, kind to children and animals and are stubborn as a mule! Some drink, some don't. Some chew, some don't. They are all different in some regards but alike in that most still have the old fashioned values of don't lie, don't cheat, don't steal and you couldn't ask for a better friend. Oh, there's always an exception in every crowd and some, unfortunately, are not good people, but most of the ones I know are great. Because the work they do is hard on the body, cowboys generally end up pretty beat up and their bodies show it. When their bodies get to where they can't do anything anymore they feel worthless and kind of give up. I guess Willie said it best "My heroes have always been cowboys"!

A true cowboy is best person every walked on this earth.He is there when you need help, not run and hide like most s.o.b.s do. Has a loving heart and always your best friend if you dont cross him. So many want to be cowboys not worth a **** for nothing, end of story

Well..here in Texas..yeeehaw..howdy partner LOL..they were the big hats,boots, gigantic belt buckles and sew on jeans..kinda walk bolegged and hav dip in their mouth with the can in the back pocket...usely hav a huge truck with the gun rack thingy goin on and listen to country music:)

Bow legs.
cancer.
smelly.
good with rifle.
good with rope.
short life.
lots of trouble.
rides a horse about 15 hours a day.
sleeps on ground a lot.
eats simple food like beans,biscuits,and beef. so times hard tack made of dryed meat and flour.
drinks whiskey more than water.
smoked allot lonely on track of cattle.
arrived in towns to cut loose..
etc.

a true cowboy drives a dirty truck and wears dirty jeans and his hat is stained and sweaty he actually works cattle. he does not wear a big shiney belt buckle he does not drive a truck that has never seen mud, he does not wear a wireless microphone.......
