3 out of 4 usb ports aren't working on my laptop...what is this the most likely result of?? Also I get an error that says, "operating system not found" on the black screen where you first see the curser blinking before you are able to log into windows, what could be wrong with my laptop?

The operating system not found error is exactly what it sounds like. The windows bootloader can't find XP(or whatever you use)
You have to reinstall windows
The usb ports probably just went out on you.

There could be a multitude of causes, but from what you explain it sounds like your USB card that plugs into your motherboard, could be loose, (Not plugged in all the way. Or it could be fried.
The USB card by itself is cheap but, unless you install it yourself can be costly.
It also sounds like you have other problems than just a USB card, if you are getting the error that says Operating System not Found.
If you are not techie I suggest you ask a friend that is so he or she can run a couple of tests to isolate the issue, If you don't know someone then you will need to take it in to a Computer Shop.

You have a bad hard drive, and you are about to lose your computer entirely. You'll probably have to have a professional recover the data on your hard drive and purchase a new one and have it installed. Or...

Try and transfer your data to a cd or thumb drive and purchase a new computer. If you can afford it, this is your best alternative.
