They're very easy, and they don't require any extra software. All you do is take the mouse out of the package. There should be a little stick of some sort with a usb connection on the end. Stick that in the usb port on your computer. Turn the mouse on (make sure you have batteries in it). Push a button on the usb thingy, and then push a button on the mouse, and then it should work. It's that easy.
Basically, there's a radio connection between the usb doohicky and the mouse, and they send information back and forth. That's how they work.
Yes, I highly recommend getting one. It's much easier to use a mouse than those little touchpad doohickies.
I got a wireless optical mouse at Big Lots for $13. That's less than half the usual price for wireless optical mice, and it works great. It has a little slot in the mouse to stick the usb thing in for easy storage so I can keep them together when I'm not using it.

Most these days are plug and play, so no special install needed. Most do need batteries, but there are some that charge in a little stand, so you wouldn't be constantly buying batteries. The last one I bought, a Logitech, turns off after a while, so you had to click any button before it would move your pointer. If a particular feature is important to you, just make sure the mouse you're looking at has it before you buy.
And as far as for your laptop goes, as long as you have the right connection (USB or PS2) on your laptop, you'll be fine. Good luck!

Kensington makes a decent wireless optical mouse. I've had 2. You plug a small receiver into the usb port on your laptop and synchronize the mouse and receiver and you're done. To synchronize the mouse and receiver all you have to do is press a small button on the receiver and one on the mouse. Some computers will remember this and you won't have to do it every time. I prefer using this that the touch pad or for the old laptops roller ball....ughhhhhh.
The one I have allows you to store the receiver under the mouse, it kinda slides in and it has a power saver. So when you aren't using it or walk away for ten or so minutes it goes into a sleep mode. Expect to pay about $30 bucks for one. Sometimes you can get them on sale for less.

Most wireless mice on modern laptops work by plugging a transmitter into a USB slot, and it gets recognised as a mouse straight away, no software to install
Most wireless mice run off batteries (typically 2 AAA type), so you may want rechargable batteries; I think that there are some rechargable models out there
I prefer a wireless mouse as it is one less cable, but it does annoy me that I have to think about batteries

wireless mouses send signals over a radio frequency to your computer. they use an open usb port or sometimes the expnansion bay to send informaiton on the whereabouts of your mouse. my logitech mx 610 which is a desktop mouse uses 2 AA batteries which lasts about 4-6months. if your looking for one for a laptop, make sure it has a 2.4 ghz frequency band, uses batteries instead of a charging base, and has an automatic shutoff feature. andother plus is to get one that is laser instead of optical becauese you wont have to carry a mouse pad with you. go to a store and hold all of their mouses because some are way more comfortable than others. my recommendtation is to get a logitech vx nano because the usb reciever doesnt stick out from usb port that much and it is laser and small and comfortable. happy hunting.

Wireless mouses love to eat up batteries! What would happen is you will get a USB adaptor (Wireless) that will communicate with the mouse. I have found that many of the wireless mouses tend to be jumpy! I for one enjoy using my wired mouse instead of the pad on the laptop. Be forewarned the mouse loves to eat up the battery power!

i love my wireless mouse =].
there is a part that attaches to a USB slot, I didnt have to install mine, and....i dont think there is a turn on or off....im not quite sure why you would want to turn off your mouse...it will turn off with the computer, if thats what you are asking. mine takes one AA battery, and I love it because it reacts REALLY well, and there is a magnifying button too! I would reccomend it as long as you have batteries normally. It takes a while for one battery to be used, but it of course, needs to be replaced every now and then. Mine is a Microsoft model: 1054. love it. oh, and for batteries dying fast-AAA's normally die fast anyways, but mine is a AA, and its only ONE.

I picked one up at Wal-Mart for around $30, with keyboard too. They both take batteries. They turn themselves off when not used for 30 seconds or so, but come on automatically when you use them. Then you plug a receiver into your computer where the mouse and keyboard hooked up originally. The batteries will last for sever months, under regular use. I'd recommend it, they're cool.

Get the USB type. You just plug it into the USB plug and its ready--I have one, its great--mine takes 1 AA battery also. Basically they work like a cordless phone does. There are 2 pieces--1 is the mouse--the other part plugs into your pc, usb plug.
