It is a signal to the wide receivers they are going to take a snap. It is so noisy in the stadium, that the wr cannot hear the snap count many times.

this is my guess, not exactly for sure though on this one. i believe its a signal to the receivers so they know when the ball will be snapped, so they can get a better jump from the line of scrimmage. also, it might be a way to get the defense to jump offsides. sometimes its used to signal the receivers into motion though. good question.

agreeing with everyone that said its to signal the wide receivers that the ball is going to be snapped soon. because they cannot hear the quarterback say "hut" so it tells them to watch the ball so they know when to go.

I hate it when wide receivers get false starts.

It's more than likely he is signalling someone to go in motion.

I thought it was a last minute visual cue to the backfield players for something, but that seems odd

Its a signal, usually for someone to go in 'motion'.
