to protect the vunerable, those unable to defend themselves
How can any civilised person say that the older person is using up valuable resources!
This was just said on here and that person (not a troll) is obscene!

Yea well Plato I answered and gave them what for.
Little jump up johnny wouldn't know where to put the battery in a football, little prick. sorry about the language but they got me so riled up, my mum is nearly 80 and her attitude towards life is outstanding, she had a hip replaced only 3 months ago and as soon as she could she was back doing her charity work.
One of the doctors asked her why at her age was she doing so much charity work for cerebral palsy and other charities, and her reply was:
" I have lived a long and good life, met and married a good man, sadly, I outlived him, my life has been full, now it's time to give a bit back"
I am so proud of my mum.

I didn't see the question Plato.
However people like that are not even worth it.
The older people in our society have probably contrubuted more than that person ever will in a lifetime. Especially if this is the sort of narrow mind they seem to have, to even come up with they suggestion that the elderly are using up valuable resources.
There are other countries who treat their elderly people with a lot more respect than here. The person who made that remark is not the sort of person I would want to infuence me in any way shape or form. They disgust me. God help their parents.
I hope they realise when they get to that certain age that their children will determine what happens to them. If this is what they are teaching them them. Then if I were them, I would be very afraid, very affraid indeed.

I didn't see the question but when it comes to the elderly, they are not only a very vulnerable group, but also seriously discriminated against. How can anyone blame them for using up valuable resources? I wonder how many of us have spent a week-end night in A and E and checked out what goes on! The majority of people attending are not elderly but drunks! So many of them you wouldn't believe. Has anyone ever thought of accusing them of using up valuable resources?
Most OAPs i know worked hard until they retired, paid tax, NHS contribution and, was it not for them ... None of us would be here today! They're someone's grand-parent, someone's mum or dad, brought their children up without benefits! Saved precious little money they had towards rainy days and when well remain active and still contribute to society. When unwell, of course they need looked after! What kind of a society would we be to simply ignore them and let them struggle? Their pensions are still pretty low and most of them wouldn't ask for help because their generation is far too proud!
They have far more patience than we have, all know old wife's tricks that work better than anything we buy in the supermarket! And in our pub! Some of them sing wonderful songs, never mind a couple of ladies in their 70s still up dancing and laughing when i've long gone back to sit down!
They went through some really tough times! We should be proud of them, proud of their contribution and respect them for all their hard work.

Abuse of the strong over the weak has been going on for some time here in America in the form of forced Euthanasia (i.e Terri Shiavo) and abortion (4000 daily). But yes you are very right that it is the duty of any civilized person to protect the lives of the weak from abuse including its ultimate form murder. This should be not matter it be for the sake of ones convenience, motivated from money, the effort to take care of such individuals, and or the stigma such persons might associate upon its supposed care giver.

I agree... there are people out there using up far more resources than older people... a 90 year old man or whatever has paid his duty to society and they should have just as many rights, if not more than a 20 year old boy who has gone straight from school to living on the dole.... I say we ship out all the people who can't be bothered to work so that we can take care of the people who genuinely need it i.e. older people who can't work any more

Well said Plato.
I got a bit angry with my reply, just couldn't help it.I may be nearly 60 but I still have a lot to give to this world.
I look after both of my adult children, 1 is disabled and they both have cancer.I must be saving the country millions.
I feel so sorry for Betty D, it reduced her to tears.

I was disgusted when I saw that post.
I worked in adult mental health for my last social work placement. I worked with this lovely elderly woman who had had schizophrenia for many many years. She was very challenging at times but I loved spending time with her, she was an incredibly lonely lady and we completed some brilliant life story work together. I was touched by her sadness and the history of the onset of her mental illness facinated me.
I didn't begrudge her a service because of her age, in fact as a team we worked with adults aged 18-65 (older if they had been long term service users - the lady I speak of was considerably older). How wrong would it have been for us to say, no sorry, we don't offer a service to the elderly.
How awful, we can learn a lot from others, older people are not excluded from this, we had some great chats and she gave me a good giggle on her good days.
I have always worked with children as you know, but she made me think twice about my stance on that!!

I disagree with you. I look after my octogenarian mother - by choice, not out of some false sense of duty. Don't get me wrong here - I don't actually have to wipe her **** for her - but she needs some help now and again.
What horrifies me is this: people have a RIGHT to live in DIGNITY - forever....
There is no dignity in casting a vote based on whether your elected represantative will support the provision of free toe-nail clipping. At the tax-payer's expense.
We are wickedly making people live longer than they should - In my street there are four old women (within less that 100 yards of my front door) who have been widows longer than they were married.
Heck, I could rant for hours - if you want the deabte, mail me.

Its amazing to work with old people, their take on life, and the sadness in Alzheimer's when they want to leave the ward to pick the children up from school. every time you break their heart explaining that the kids have grown up now. So sad.
